Song of the Day – “Freedom Overspill” – Steve Winwood

Little Stevie Winwood? Well, he does play keyboards and he did start at an astonishing young age with the Spencer Davis Group, but I don’t think he was ever in danger of being called Little Stevie, like Stevie Wonder.

This is a non-single track from the hugely successful Back in the High Life.

iPhoneography Apps – Vintage Scene

I’ve commented before (in my post on Scratchcam) that it’s interesting that, as each of us get a camera in our pocket or purse that’s capable of taking much better pictures than an old Kodak 110 or 126 (the “carry everywhere” cameras of my youth), we have a fascination with making our pictures as damaged-looking as possible.

VS Splash

But I like it too. One of my favorite apps for making new pictures look old is Vintage Scene by JixiPix Software. If you’re looking for just a touch of age, look elsewhere; Vintage Scene takes your pictures back many, many decades.

Song of the Day – “New Music” Wednesday – “Cassette 2012” – Delay Trees

Direct from that hotbed of popular music, Finland, comes Delay Trees. They list their influences as Christmas carols and lullabies, but this song is a little darker, as they weave in paranoia about the supposed end of the world in 2012:

I’ll meet you in 2012 on the stairs where we first met
And I’ll bring you a cassette we can listen to when all ends – softly

This came from their 2010 debut, but they released Doze last year. I’ll get around to picking it up now that we’re still here.

Song of the Day – “Name’s the same” Tuesday – “Human Touch”

Bruce Springsteen

You’ve broken up your band and taken a couple of years off. Do you:

a) release a double album with all your saved-up material;
b) release a single album and save some of your songs for another album a year later;
c) release two single albums AT THE SAME TIME.

Mere mortals would do A or B, but if you’re The Boss, you release Human Touch and Lucky Town at the same time. And congratulate yourself as they both go platinum. Day-um.

Joe Jackson

Yet another gorgeous song from the “angry” Joe Jackson. From 1989’s Blaze of Glory.

(OK, so the song is actually called “The Human Touch”. What’s an article among friends?)

Song of the Day – “Hanna Hanna” – China Crisis

Going back 30 years, once again, to 1983. This selection comes from China Crisis’ sophomore release. Their first was called Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain, and this one was Working with Fire and Steel: Possible Pop Songs, Vol. 2. Luckily, they lightened up on the verbiage after that.

Song of the Day – “In the Waiting Line” – Zero 7

Downtempo laid-back European soul from about ten years ago.

Song of the Day – “Happy Wanderer” – Brave Combo

Many of you, no doubt, will think, after listening to this, that I have finally “gone off the deep end”. To you, I say, “Ha Ha!” Or even “Val-der-ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!”

The Brave Combo bravely works that fine line between polka and rock. OK, maybe that wide chasm between polka and rock. They have a lot of fun, though, and that comes through in their music.
