The Beach Boys, with Pet Sounds, and the Beatles, with Sgt. Pepper, ushered in a time of orchestral experimentation in rock music that was furthered by the debut of Electric Light Orchestra in 1971. This track form their debut, called No Answer in the States, was full of genre-bending tunes like this one.
