Song of the Day – “Unforgettable” – Nat King Cole

Yes, I know – Natalie Cole released a “duet” version of this with her father. Nevertheless, this is Daddy’s song.

Music is music, no matter what the era, and Mr. Cole was a genius.

Song of the Day – “Would I Lie to You?” – Eurythmics

Annie shows her fierce side in this track. Listen for Dave Stewart’s sage advice: “Be yourself tonight”. It just happened to be the name of the album.

Song of the Day – “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” – Elton John

Thirty years ago, Elton could still hit all the notes.

It’ll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again

Just when you think Taupin’s lyrics were too obscure, you find some lines like this you can relate to.

Song of the Day – “Thank You Friends” – Big Star

Thank you, friends
Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you
I’m so grateful for all the things you helped me do

Power pop pyrotechnics occurred when Alex Chilton went back to Memphis and joined up with buddy Chris Bell’s band Icewater to form Big Star. This song was written by Chilton, who was barely out of his teens.

All the ladies and gentlemen
Who made this all so probable

iPhoneography Apps: Water Battle Part 2 – Flood!

Color Lake, the app I covered in the first part of the Water Battle, was initially released in January 2012. Two years later, a challenger stepped forward to submerge your photos by the name of Flood. Flood was developed by Flaming Pear Software, makers of many desktop Photoshop plug-ins (including Flood for Photoshop). There are resemblances to Color Lake, but the first difference you’ll notice when working with both is that Flood does not create moving water or videos. The water is static.

Song of the Day – “New Music” Wednesday – “Take Me to Church” – Sinead O’Connor

I don’t wanna love the way I loved before
I don’t want to love that way no more
What have I been writing love songs for?
I don’t wanna write them anymore
I don’t wanna sing from where I sang before
I don’t wanna sing that way no more
What have I been singing love songs for?

Sinead has come a long way from her earlier self, and declares her independence from that person in this track from her new album I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss. She’s still fierce, though.

Songs of long and spiteful fails
Songs that won’t let you sit still
Songs that’ll mend your broken bones
And don’t leave you alone
So get me down from this here tree
Take the rope from off of me

Song of the Day – “Name’s the same” Tuesday – “Pump It Up”

Elvis Costello – Gary Numan

Very early Elvis Costello leads off today, with a video that played upon the cover of his second album, This Year’s Model. Flashy organ work by Steve Nieve – but listen to that bass by Bruce Thomas. He was an important part of the sound of the Attractions.

.

Between his early alienated robot music and his later industrial music, Gary Numan actually produced some fairly catchy music for the dance floor. This is from 1984’s Berzerker.

Even though the background singers are saying “Pump Me Up”, and a later cover by Caroline Munro was entitled “Pump Me Up”, the original track was actually entitled “Pump It Up”. A mistake? Who knows?
