Song of the Day – “King Rocker” – Generation X

Happy birthday to Billy Idol, who, before he went solo, was the singer for Generation X.

How great it is to see him with a mullet and without the leather and chains!

Song of the Day – “Beechwood 4-5789” – The Marvelettes

Yesterday was Berry Gordy’s 85th birthday. Regardless of how he treated his artists, he did manage to give us Motown, for which we are eternally grateful.

This early Marvelettes hit was co-written by Marvin Gaye, and he plays drums on the track.

Song of the Day – “(I’ve Got a) Crush on You” – Katrina and the Waves

Not the most memorable song ever – but I couldn’t resist the play on words for Black Friday, when a crush of people inundates stores.

But it is proof that Katrina Leskanich could sing a ballad as well as the bouncy tunes she’s known for.

Song of the Day – “Thanksgiving” – George Winston

My own Thanksgiving tradition – this beautiful piano solo from George Winston. Enjoy it yet again, for the sixth year running!

iPhoneography Apps: Pixelmator Part 4 – Brushes, Smudgers and Erasers

I have to admit I’ve dreaded this part of the series on Pixelmator. Put a brush in my hand and disasters occur. I immediately revert to drawing stick figures larger than houses – and the houses have curly smoke coming out of the chimney.

But Pixelmator offers brushes, smudgers and erasers that allow you to create art from scratch, without any photos. So here I am, trying to explain tools that hopelessly overmatch my meager skills. Buckle yourself in and let’s get started.

Pixelmator allows you to start with a blank canvas – Portrait, Landscape or Custom, which lets you set the dimensions of the canvas. All produce a plain white canvas.

Song of the Day – “New Music” Wednesday – “Waiting” – The Sea The Sea

They call this kind of music “ambient folk”, which is fairly descriptive – it’s pleasant, not ground-breaking.

But this is featured here because of the video, a time-lapse of a nighttime cab ride that is made up of over 3400 individual oil paintings. An incredible achievement.

Song of the Day – “Name’s the same” Tuesday – “I Like It”

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy – Sid King & the Five Strings

Two different genres of music today. First of all, some hot swing revival with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. I like it when bands can perform as cleanly and well-balanced live as they do in the studio. From 2003’s Save My Soul.

.

Salacious proto-rock from the mid-50s. Sid King & the Five Strings were a Texas band whose songs were in a style that had no name yet, but were a combination of Western Swing and rockabilly.
