Song of the Day – “Rockit” – Herbie Hancock

This was an odd hit for 1983. Herbie Hancock had established himself as a jazz keyboard virtuoso, playing with the likes of Donald Byrd and Miles Davis.

Usually, when an artist is firmly rooted in one type of music, it’s considered a “crossover” when other types of music are attempted – and they bring their strength along with them. But Hancock’s “crossover” was totally different. It’s not a jazz artist bringing his jazz influence to funk/hip-hop: it’s fully an electronic funk single.

Oh, and isn’t it obvious how the video inspired yesterday’s video?
