Song of the Day – “The Freshmen” – The Verve Pipe

It’s a good song, but it’s a troubling song. The narrator and his best friend were caught in situations that no one should have to deal with when they are as young as freshmen. And it is true that an abortion is the woman’s decision, and that you shouldn’t blame yourself for another’s suicide.

But it’s off-putting as well, if only for this couplet:

I won’t be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

The narrator becomes so whinily insistent in washing his hands of everything that relationships result in that we start to question all that he’s telling us in this song. Just how blameless is he?
