Song of the Day – “Name’s the same” Tuesday – “Emily”

Los Lobos – Singers Unlimited

A couple of polarizing songs today – you may not like them.

The first, from Los Lobos’ The Neighborhood, is a slow tune with fiddle – very different from their usual norteña music.

This second song, a standard from Mercer and Mandel, is beautifully performed by acapella group Singers Unlimited. They were formed by Gene Puerling to perform commercial jingles, and they have the antiseptic, elevator-music vibe that was required in commercial music of the sixties. That’s best taken in small doses. But their voices blend so well, and the chords are so lush, that I’ve got to give them credit.
