Song of the Day – “Don’t Be That Way” – Lionel Hampton Quintet

With jazz standards, like this one from Benny Goodman, it’s possible to find a number of great performances of the same song. This is from Lionel Hampton, whose instrument was the vibraphone, or vibes. I happen to really like the sound of the vibes, so will take a version of most every song that includes them.

You may hear mutterings under Hamp’s solo, which should give you a clue as to the piano player in the quintet – Oscar Peterson. And that’s Buddy Rich on the drums, along with Buddy DeFranco on the clarinet and Ray Brown on bass.
