Bowie Song of the Day – “The Drowned Girl”

Bowie was not just a singer; he was an actor as well. As an actor he could make other people’s songs come to life.

That is an ironic way to put it, because today’s song is a very, VERY dark song about a suicide and the uncaring river that carries the dead body away. It was written by Bertolt Brecht for his play Baal, and arranged by Kurt Weill.

I can remember seeing this video back in the eighties, and getting a near-permanent chill down my spine from the way Bowie changes his voice for the phrase that begins “Once her pallid trunk…”. It’s a difficult song to listen to, both musically and lyrically, but it is a tremendous achievement.
