Prince protégé Denise Matthews was given the name Vanity when she was picked to lead this vocal trio. She was beautiful and moderately talented, branching out to act in movies such as The Last Dragon and Action Jackson. That meant leaving the group before the movie Purple Rain, and Appolonia taking over with Appolonia 6.
Denise Matthew got into drugs back in the eighties, and it affected her health for the rest of her shortened life. She passed away Monday at the age of 57. It’s a tragedy, and a shame that she couldn’t look back at the eighties as a time when she temporarily hit the top and had a good time, instead of seeing it as the time of the events which eventually killed her.
