Song of the Day – “Trilogy” – Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Keith Emerson passed away a couple of weeks ago. The virtuoso keyboardist suffered from depression, and took his own life. It’s such an insidious disease. New drugs can help combat depression, but they don’t work for everyone and the side effects can often seem as bad as the disease. In Emerson’s case, he was a known sufferer for decades, and we can only be glad that he held it in abeyance for all that time.

I read in an article about progressive rock the other day that the artists were all about the music – not causes, not fame, not rabble-rousing. ELP seemed to personify that attitude. They pulled influences from wherever they could get them – classical, jazz, rock – and delighted in playing more than anything. That’s shown in this title track from 1972.
