Song of the Day – “Wait a Minute” – Arlie

Here’s a great new band from the Nashville area. I heard of them because I know the uncle of the lead singer. This is their single, released last year, and their first album, Break the Curse, comes out in June.

They have a way of sounding both timeless and new that I enjoy.

Song of the Day – “Delirious” – Prince

During the previous seven years of Song of the Day, I was unable to post many Prince songs since he kept a tight hold on his music. While I’m thrilled to be able to choose from his catalog, I’d much rather still have him around.

Song of the Day – “Losing My Religion” – R.E.M.

I was sure I’d already posted this, but no…

R.E.M. was big before this song came out on 1991’s Out of Time, but it took them to a whole new level. To me, it’s the quintessential R.E.M. song.

That was just a dream…

Song of the Day – “Hold Me Up” – Velvet Crush

Velvet Crush have been putting the power in power pop since the 90s. Their major label debut was 1994’s Teenage Symphonies to God, and they released a few albums between that and 2016’s Pre-Teen Symphonies.

Song of the Day – “Doraville” – Atlanta Rhythm Section

I had just moved into the Atlanta area when they started playing this song. If Doraville was “a touch of country in the city” at the time, it certainly wasn’t for long. Nothing within the Perimeter highway is country almost 50 years later.

Song of the Day – “Sexy Coffee Pot” – Tony Alvon and the Belairs

There’s something joyous about a funky instrumental track. This obscure track is one of the best. From 1969.

Song of the Day – “Someone to Lay Down Beside Me” – Karla Bonoff

Bonoff is an artist I’ve always wanted to see, but never really had the chance to – until last night. I’ve seen her booked into clubs with no seating, and that is a definite “no” for me, even when I was on the younger side of 60.

I can’t imagine her not singing this song from her 1977 debut. (I had no reason to worry. She closed with this.)

Song of the Day – “Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking” – Rickie Lee Jones

Do you got a map to the next joint?

A rarity – a joyful song by Rickie. From her second album, Pirates.

Song of the Day – “Never Going Back Again” – Fleetwood Mac

I saw a video the other day about how horribly difficult it is to play this song. I don’t play, so anything is horribly difficult for me. But when he started to play the alternating rhythm with his thumb and descending pattern with the fingers while talking about the flatted 13th, well, I was lost.

Song of the Day – “Springtime” – Donald Fagen

Let’s all drive into springtime!
